Vegetarian, Healthy Oatmeal Frikadeller

Forget veggie burgers: this is the closest taste to a “meat patty” you will ever get, without “cheating.” A favorite in our household, these oatmeal frikadeller taste as good as chicken meatballs, but without any meat whatsoever.

Vegetarian, Healthy Oatmeal Frikadeller

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 handfull fresh mixed herbs (oregano, mint, parsley leaf, lovace, chives) – finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup hot water or vegetable stock
  • 1 small onion (preferably red) – finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • pinch of red chili peppers
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • canola oil to fry

In a large bowl, beat egg with stock till foamy, then mix in the onion, garlic, lemon juice, chili peppers, salt and pepper, and the herbs. Add the oatmeal, and stir to incorporate well with all the ingredients. Set aside for 15 minutes, till the oatmeal “sucks in” all the liquid.

Form into patties.


Oatmeal Frikadeller

Deep fry over medium heat, till golden brown – about 2-3 minutes on each side. Set on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve with fresh salad, and garlicky dips.

The recipe can be enhanced with sesame seeds, grated carrots, soy sauce, and other vegetarian ingredients. Do kids enjoy it? Mine does:



  1. Every day Mihaela comes up with new and interesting dishes. I have to say though, as a dedicated meat lover, this one did not fool me – it made me enjoy a vegetarian alternative immensely. I would say it "tasted like chicken" but it was actually better. Suggest Canola and Balsamic on the salad

  2. The salad is with @CretaVita olive oil, but the frikadellen are fried in canola oil. 🙂
